Due diligence

Reasonable steps taken by a person or an organisation to avoid committing a tort or an offence. A careful investigation of the state of a business by a person or organisation that is thinking of buying it or investing in it

Example usage from an FT article:

He said it would require the company to do due diligence on the labour practices of all the group’s suppliers, with a global supply chain that involves “100,000” companies.
