Professor Mimi Zou

School of Private and Commercial Law, UNSW
My research explores private and commercial law issues related to AI and the regulation of emerging technologies. Before joining UNSW, I held senior academic roles internationally, including the Chair in Commercial Law at the University of Exeter and the first Fellowship in Chinese Law at the University of Oxford. At Oxford, I founded its first lawtech lab and co-led an AI spinout. I am a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
I work with industry, government, and civil society to advance responsible AI and ethical technology practices. I am a member of the LawtechUK Panel and a senior independent expert advising the UK Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary on new and emerging technologies and data governance. I have previously served on the UK Government’s expert body on responsible AI and data innovation and on international taskforces on technology governance, including the G7, World Economic Forum, World Bank, UNIDROIT and the International Panel on the Information Environment.
I have published widely on AI and law, most recently The Cambridge Handbook of Generative AI and the Law. I have been recognised with the Global Australian Award for Technology (2024) and the Flos Greig Trailblazer Award for innovation (2025).
